Frequently Asked Questions

Below you'll find answers to the most common questions about how ParentLegal works, what we can help with, and where our boundaries are.

If you're unsure about anything not covered here, feel free to get in touch.

1. What kind of cases do you help with?

We support family court matters in England and Wales including child arrangements, prohibited steps orders, non-molestation orders, and more complex hearings like fact-finding or bundle preparation.

2. Do you give legal advice?

No. Legal advice is reserved for regulated professionals. We help you understand the process, think through strategy, and create strong documents — but you remain in control.

3. Will you write or check my statement?

Yes. We help clients draft and review position statements, witness statements, chronologies and supporting documents. You submit them, we help polish them.

4. Do you go to court with me?

Sometimes. We can attend as a McKenzie Friend, offering calm, quiet guidance if the judge permits it. We don't speak for you unless invited by the court.

5. Can I talk to someone if I’m stuck?

Absolutely. We offer one-to-one support, strategic sessions, document feedback and clear summaries to help you move forward confidently.

6. How much do your services cost?

We price transparently with no hourly fees. Most clients find our support more cost-effective than hiring a solicitor.

7. Can I use ParentLegal if I already have a solicitor?

Yes. Many clients use ParentLegal alongside their solicitor—for document feedback, second opinions or bridging gaps in representation.

8. What's the difference between you and a solicitor?

Solicitors can give legal advice and act on your behalf. We help you help yourself—through preparation, clarity, and empowerment.

9. How quickly can you help me?

We're usually very responsive. Let us know if you have a deadline or upcoming hearing, and we'll prioritise accordingly.

10. Is my information confidential and secure?

Yes. We treat all client materials with strict confidentiality and use secure systems for storage and transfer.

11. Can you help me if I don't live in England or Wales?

Our full support is tailored to courts in England and Wales, but we can help with written documents and strategy worldwide.

12. What is a McKenzie Friend?

A non-lawyer who provides moral and practical support in court. They help you stay calm, take notes, and offer quiet guidance.

13. Can I reclaim costs spent with ParentLegal?

Usually, each party covers their own costs, but there are exceptions. We can help document fees if they're relevant to your case.
